INTRODUCTION

 

The possibility of using micro wind turbines in urban areas has led to widespread interest. Micro wind turbines have the potential to be setup on the roofs of houses and buildings and have a major contribution in the reduction of the average house hold electricity bills. The improvements in the technology of micro wind turbine have contributed to the increase in the overall power output. One of the advantages of Micro wind turbines is to provide free energy for the urban areas and it is known to be self-dependent. Developing countries make use of the greatest potential for off-grid systems because of the number of houses that are located away from the grid and the expense of the grid connection. Other suitable applications include telecommunication towers and farms. In addition to the fact that micro wind turbines can be mounted on buildings, they can also be mounted to poles and positioned in such a way that it is exposed to the current wind direction.

 

 

Objectives

 

The objective of this project is to develop a micro horizontal axis wind turbine which is powered by wind energy in conjunction with a shaft and with the use of a generator as the main source of electricity generation in the turbine with emphasis on developing a cost efficient design of the horizontal axis wind turbine.
